| Ferrari and McLaren dominated the morning practice session with Kimi Raikkonen leading the way with a best lap of 1:26.461s, nearly half a second clear of Lewis Hamilton in his McLaren. Felipe Massa was third ahead of Heikki Kovalainen. |

| Williams Toyota had big problems with Nico Rosberg pitting his FW30 at the end of his installation lap with a gearbox problem and would not even record a timed lap. Kazuki Nakajima also hit problems and completed just three laps and was slowest by a large margin. |

| Nick Heidfeld had electrical problems with his BMW Sauber and stopped on track, while David Coulthard brought his Red Bull Renault back to the pits belching smoke from the rear. Nelson Piquet had a shaky start as he brought out the first red flag of the season after spinning and stalling his Renault. |
